Behind the Lens | Random Improvisation

This was the alternate shot of the final composition, but the terrain looks off-road than concrete.

Toy Photography means a lot to so many people and majority of these individuals have enjoyed photography using different subjects. But using an amount of various and diverse toys are often gives you that choice to pick that challenge. There are those who take it to the next level, but there’s nothing like random impromptu shoot.

For those who keep some of their toys in their bag while in their regular travels. An example of one individual named Tomek did shared his on Toy Photographers. But surely there are others that do this on a regular basis.

Interesting enough it is rare nowadays to take up the challenge outdoors, which depends on the terrain where you live or work around your area. Usually, for those who just bring their toys in their bag the constant ideas and imagination never runs out. Sometimes it is sudden moment that you happen to have this idea when everything is already dark and you’re posed to put that challenge to yourself.

Taken at the Liwasang Bonifacio at the border of the colorful fountain. It doesn't appeal when it appears to be floating.

Finding Your Challenge

If you’re into random things and you only have the toys on your bag that you can work with chances are there are already ideas at work. Sometimes the thought of “Expectations VS Reality” come into play and the one in your head when you execute it eventually doesn’t work most of the time.

But sometimes at the end things work out when you’re trying to experiment by “Trial and Error” that would surprise you with unexpected results. It happens a lot of times those who take up the challenge and most of the times you end up failing. At the same time it teaches you what to do and not to do.

It is also being aware of your surroundings when doing this random toy shots and you ask yourself why pick up the idea this time when everything is already dark.

Just nearby the Bonifacio Shrine. At the back is the Manila City Hall's clock tower.

Improvisation Location

There are locations and also unexpected terrain at the same time being aware of your surroundings. It is one of those days you have to ask yourself why, do this now when you can do it on broad daylight. Sometimes the ideas and circumstances flow when the least you expect that you’re in the groove and other times you just “itching” to shoot something out of the ordinary day.

It also depends on the weather and how the surrounding areas, which is how to “get the feel” of it with people and the place. It is not about intuition it is about taking it all in if you’re feel this is the right place or you’re unsatisfied with the spot that you found and then there you start to experiment.

You find a good spot and feel the area trying to get the best shot out of this location. There are good part that you can place the subject, namely the toy you plan to use that works in that area and then there’s a toy that doesn’t so don’t force it.

The background doesn't jive with the artificial lighting while waiting for the train to arrive.

The Best Imperfect Shot

Capturing an image of your subject takes good timing and the right frame when you find that eventful perspective. It is some of the Toy Photographer’s challenge to be on their toes in getting that image, but sometimes you hold yourself and still try to keep taking photos for you to choose from.

There are others who still can’t understand why a “One Shot Story” concept is all about. It is not about the abundance of good photos you captured it is THE ONE that would stand out to give others an idea and a story why this one image has stand out in all the other photos you’ve taken with the same place and location.

Sometimes there other places you used the same toy, but could not find that right angle or that background don’t match up with the subject. There are no perfect but there is an imperfect image that results to become the best image in the lot.

At the Glorietta Park just in front of the mall itself. The background and lighting is right but the surface does not work.

Having Fun Where Nobody Cared

At the end of the day this random challenge is not about for public consumption, but finding that rare adventure for you to achieve on those little things that nobody would even care. It is important that you’re having fun and that is all that matters. Because if you put too much emphasis on getting LIKEs or followers on social media it is not that fun anymore and there will pressure on your end that becomes unhealthy.

If you find that you’ve “got it” and you feel like you’re satisfied with all the images captured and the process of choosing the best one. Then you’ve got what you’ve came for and on to the next one whenever your challenge brings you. Of course, there’s that “itch” need to be scratch at random and all you need is a good camera, basic natural lighting, and that toy that you think would work in that spot.

Then off you go and find that imperfect random day to capture that next image. But remember always keep the enthusiasm and fun whenever you can, for now.
