Up The Ante | Summer 2020 Theme

Batman on a Holiday at Semaphore Beach, South Australia taken on 17 February 2018 during the Brickstameet!

In Southeast Asia the summer season brings out the best in Toy Photography. The usual concept is taking well-known characters and putting them in a ‘slice of life’ kind of theme that brings a different take on the character’s persona. This is where some of best ideas to Bringing Toys to Life!

The community runs a monthly theme and for April 2020 it has something to do with the summer season, which was unnoticeable to the majority of the group. But for those who made the effort to put together their composition they are immediately selected for bringing their toys to life in a literal sense in appreciating the season.

In reality majority of everyone couldn’t get out of the house due to the quarantine period imposed of the government since the coronavirus pandemic was confirmed. Of course, some would express their thoughts about the current situations while others give their optimistic perspective about the season.

For the last two months it was a challenging experience, but to those who rose from the situation here are some of the images curated from the community...

Simon Sweetman has been in the community and has been known for posting his photos using Popeye the Sailorman, the classic King Feature syndicated American comic strip. It’s something humorous at the same time optimistic about the Spinach gulping hero spending his time on his front lawn, which you should avoid trespassing.

There hasn’t been much of an artistic style in Toy Photography that doesn’t need a popular figure to use as the subject for the narrative. But Sue Newcomb has been a low key in her photo though this one is simple and illuminating to see a unicorn in the wild while galloping in some unknown greenery.

Brian Jones has also contributed to the monthly theme with two of his entries, but of course only the best one gets to be chosen and that’s Kermit playing his trademark instrument while on his horse exploring the fine afternoon similar to the recent live stream that featured the Muppet playing “Rainbow Connections.”

When you see a well-worded, crisp, and at the same time humorous concept Ang Cheng “Sunny” Ang surely delivers with his impressive composition that takes one Stormtrooper on a dip from the humid weather as his entry and it was surely a splash!

David Gilliver takes his summer interpretation reflecting what everyone deals with just the way some realities that actually happened in some parts of North America, Europe and even Australia. David’s entry reminds everyone about the Coronavirus is unavoidable for the reason this PSA is a reminder how to deal with this season.

To complete the list the six images of summer Les Green shares his ‘summer feels’ as the sun sets down as the silhouette featuring the LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store (213110) as the subject shows that even in these challenging times you can still appreciate a good sunset.

These images certainly brings a perspective that everyone should aspire to create not just battle or action scenes, but how these individuals tell their story that are relatable at the same time interestingly entertaining. From a grumpy old sea dog to basking on another day’s end these images captures the season amidst the global crisis at the same time still share a little bit of hope, life, and laughter.

The Next Theme: May 2020 is all about your childhood toys, and in using them to this theme and sharing a little bit of background story how you acquired them while giving them a new perspective through your composition is your challenge.
